A Tunisian Girl


Lina Ben Mhenni is a professor at the University of Tunis and an active blogger in French, English and Arabic since 2007. Despite the risks, she blogged from Tunisia and tried to inform people about the repression and censorship experienced under the Ben Ali regime. During the events of December 2010 and January 2011, she went as far as travelling to places like Sidi Bouzid and Kasrine to document the repression and killings. She now keeps a careful watch on political developments in the new Tunisia.

The popularity of his blog, Haft, which means "seven," has caused problems for him with his service provider since every time he posted a new biting and satirical caricature, the huge number of people who would visit the site crashed the server. Community members search out expensive and short public calls for bids. Membership is open to all. A flagged call for bids is then monitored and evaluated by the site\'s experts. Should the experts uncover irregularities, they contact prosecutors to file a lawsuit. Several call for bids have been suspended because of the site\'s work. Lawyers are paid by donations made to the site. Three well-known blogger monitor the distribution of donations.

A Facebook group formed in honor of a young man from Alexandria named Khaled Saeed, who was killed by police. His death sparked the January 25 revolution in Egypt, which toppled the regime of Hosni Mubarak. The Facebook group, which has more than 1 million followers, played an instrumental role in the revolution and helped mobilize people online and advocate political efforts on the ground.

The launch of the Adibashi platform made it possible for any people, mainly students, to express themselves freely.
