The BanglaBraille project aims to create braille and audio textbooks for visually impaired school children in Bangladesh. Close to one million people in Bangladesh are visually impaired, including more than 50,000 school age children who are unable to study due to the lack of expensive braille textbooks. BanglaBraille uses the power of crowdsourcing and social media to assemble a team of dedicated volunteers using Internet-based collaboration to transcribe textbooks into digital form for both print and audio books. Volunteers have generated many high quality audio books and digitized textbooks for class 1-10 levels which are distributed via the BanglaBraille website.

Developed using software created by the site’s founders, Mülksüzleştirme Ağları, or Networks of Dispossession, offers a sophisticated database and mapping of the network of actors involved in Turkey’s massive urban transformation projects. Since the recent corruption investigations, the site has been extremely helpful for citizens to understand and examine the corrupt relations of capital and power in Turkey.

The site comes to the aid of people in need of blood transfusions when the right type of blood is not available at a nearby hospital. Since the next medical center could be hundreds of kilometers away, DonorSearch serves as an online blood bank with nearly 17,000 volunteers across Russia ready to donate their blood.

Mata Massa


This site was developed by the Independent Journalist Alliance (AJI) Jakarta & ICT Laboratory for Social Change in response to the 2014 general elections. The problems of transparency and accountability have long plagued Indonesian elections, especially in the Reformation era. This platform focuses on monitoring offenses and violations of general election rules and regulations as a way of improving parliament and public policy. It gives members of the public the opportunity to report election law infringements they witness and uses an extensive network of participants to follow up on the reports it gets. So far, before the campaign sessions begin, the site has processed more than 1,000 reports.

Created by International Center for Journalists, CGNet Swara also circumvents the problem of the unavailability of radio waves, which are owned and licensed by the state, in India for private use.

It is a genius combination of technology and local culture that allows the public to appreciate the Internet as a way of enriching life rather than as an external force for modernization and globalization.

Threema


Threema is a Swiss messaging app for smart phones. It makes it possible to send encrypted chats, messages, photos and videos. Threema makes use of QR codes to verify contacts and provides end-to-end encryption so third parties cannot read the messages. The service is operated by Manuel Kasper. In the summer of 2013 and winter of 2014, Threema was among the most popular paid-for apps in the German-speaking world.
